Relating Imperatives to Action
نویسنده
چکیده
The aim of this paper is to provide an analysis of the use of logically complex imperatives, in particular, imperatives of the form`Do A1 or A2' and`Do A, if B'. I argue for an analysis of imperatives in terms of Classical Logic which takes into account the innuence of background information on imperatives. I show that by doing so one can avoid some counter-intuitive results which have been associated with analyses of imperatives in terms of Classical Logic. In particular, I address Hamblin's observations concerning rule-like imperatives and Ross' Paradox. The analysis is carried out within an Agent-based Logical framework. This analysis explicates what it means for an agent to have a successful policy for action with respect to satisfying his or her commitments, where some of these commitments have been introduced as a result of imperative language use.

متن کاملBeware misleading cues: perceptual similarity modulates the N2/P3 complex.
Event-related potentials were used to investigate neural processes relating perceptual similarity to action control. To assess whether perceptual overlap among targets and nontargets would modulate the N2/P3 complex, the present study used multiple nontarget categories varying in their targetlike characteristics. Participants made one (relatively rare) response to a low-probability stimulus (ta...
متن کاملITRI-00-14 Imperatives, Commitment and Action: Towards a Constraint-based Model
The aim of this paper is to provide an analysis of the function of imperatives in dialogue. In particular, the focus is on the use of logically complex imperatives (e.g., ‘Say hello to John, if you meet him’) and temporal reference in imperatives (e.g., ‘Open the bottle of champagne at midnight’). Two specific problems involving logically complex and temporally referring imperatives are introdu...

متن کاملOptimizing the future: imperatives between form and function
The aim of this paper is to get rid of a nasty ambiguity between commands and permissions associated with imperatives (necessity/constraining of options vs. possibility/widening of options). I argue that a uniform semantics in terms of necessity together with certain assumptions about the context can account for the different effects on the pragmatic side. The difference is explained by employi...
